II. POSITION SUMMARY:


The Medical Assistant (M.A.) under direct supervision will perform routine patient care, technical and supportive functions in a Rural Health Clinic setting. The Medical Assistant will function within the scope of practice as described by the State of California Board. 



III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform routine patient care functions as prescribed by licensed heath care providers following established clinical protocols, policies and procedures within their scope of education, training and responsibilities.
  • Perform routine clerical functions as assigned (making appointments, telephone calls etc.).
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by provider order. 
  • Document pertinent patient information, nursing procedures and patient response, following established guidelines and maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as directed and/or required.
  • Explain purpose and process of examinations, tests and medical procedures to patients, following established guidelines.
  • Provide information to patients on general health and basic self care guidelines.
  • Follow standard infection control procedures.
  • Initiate emergency procedures (including basic CPR) and assist in emergency patient treatments.
  • Observe patient vital signs, Observe patients for bleeding.
  •  Prepare and position patients for physical examinations.
  • Rinse and clean instruments and equipment.
  • Sterilize instruments and equipment.
  • Answer patient inquiries within the scope of practice for Medical Assistants.
  •  Respond to Code blues, Take and record patient vital signs, height, weight, etc.
  • Obtain and record responses to all prompted questions on progress notes.
  • Complete appropriate forms for lab analysis, radio logic testing and specialized testing forms.
  • Assist providers in obtaining tissue specimens and biopsies.
  • Daily and monthly inspections of the emergency equipment, following established guidelines.
  • Obtain and prepare specimens from patients (urine, stool, etc.) for lab analysis.
  • Complete patient forms as appropriate.
  • Participate in department meetings.
  • Request medical records.
  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Prepare outgoing mail, Record and send Fax’s, Maintain department logs.
  • Prepare post cards as directed.
  • Order medical supplies and equipment as required.
  • Demonstrate safety procedures.
  • Participate in department meetings.
  • Answer telephones and take messages.



Requirements


VI. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Completion of accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred. Employee may be trained on the job in compliance with State regulations if needed.

Current Basic Life Support Card required.

Ability to learn about patients and their problems. 

Certified Medical Assistant must pass the State Certified Medical Assistant Examination and keep certification current.



VII. PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Physical Activity: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light to Medium Work.
